About Uttar Pardesh

Uttar PardeshUttar Pradesh, literally translated as "Northern Province" in English, is a state situated in Northern India.

Lucknow is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh and Kanpur is its economic and industrial capital. The state is surrounded by the country of Nepal and Uttarakhand on its north, Delhi and Haryana on its northwest, Rajasthan on its west, Madhya Pradesh on its southwest, Bihar on its east and Jharkhand on its southeast.

The state is spread over an area of 2,40,928 sq km and has 75 districts. The state comprises over 19,98,12,341 inhabitants as of 2011 census, becoming the most populous state in the country. Uttar Pradesh has a number of historical, religious, natural and man-made tourist destinations, such as the Taj Mahal, Kaushambi, Varanasi, Kushinagar, Chitrakoot, Lucknow, Jhansi, Meerut, Allahabad and Mathura.




VARANASI

A city as old as time. A city that has seen the world turn, tides change and generations of humans born and die. Varanasi or Kashi, which has been standing the tests of time for over 5,000 years is said to be one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. In Mark Twain's words, "Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together."


What draws millions of pilgrims from all over the world to the city of Varanasi is the fact that it is one of the holiest of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism. Called the spiritual capital of India, this magnificent city of learning radiates endless energy.



MATHURA - VRINDAVAN

Just an hour's drive from Agra, on the banks of the river Yamuna, is situated the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The entire land is dotted with magnificent temples, dedicated to various aspects of his life. The twin cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where he was born and where he grew up, still resound to the sound of his laughter, antics and his magical flute.


Some of the famous temples are : Govind Dev Temple, Rangaji Temple, Dwarikadhish Temple, Bankey Bihari Temple and the ISKCON Temple.



DUDHWA TIGER RESERVE

Dudhwa Tiger Reserve is one of the finest few remaining examples of the exceedingly diverse and productive Tarai eco-system. The northern edge of the reserve lies along the Indo-Nepal border and the southern boundary is marked by the river Suheli.


It is well known sanctuary of the swamp deer and is home to tigers, leopards, varieties of deer, antelopes, elephants, jackal, hyena etc, amid thick green forest and grassland. It is also a bird watchers' heaven. A large number of rhinos are also found here.



NAWABGANJ BIRD SANCTUARY

Its a welcome pause on the midway of Lucknow-Kanpur highway. Siberian cranes are among the category of migratory bird species that rest here.


There is a huge lake here that is surrounded by a vast green expanse. It is known to host Siberian cranes among migratory bird species that rest here during the winter months. Here the tweet of hundreds of birds is quite entertaining. The sanctuary also houses a deer park, watchtowers and boats.

CHANDRA PRABHA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Chandauli district near Varanasi. Endowed with beautiful picnic spots, dense forest and scenic waterfalls, it was once a habitat of Asiatic Lions. Waterfalls add great charm to the lush green environment of the sanctuary during rainy season.

PILIBHIT TIGER RESERVE

Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is located in Pilibhit district, Lakhimpur Kheri District and Bahraich District of Uttar Pradesh The Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is one of the finest examples of the exceedingly diverse and productive Terai eco-systems.


The study done by Wildlife Institute of India (WII) shows that Dudhwa-Pilibhit population has high conservation value as it represents the only tiger population with the ecological and behavioral adaptations of the tiger unique to the Tarai region.

JHANSI FORT

In 17th century, this fort was built by King Bir Singh Judeo of Orchha on top of a hill as an army stronghold. The fort has been a witness to the fiery battle led by Rani Laxmi Bai. There are temples of Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha within the fort. The Karak Bijli and Bhawani Shankar cannon of the queen are also kept inside the fort.


There is also a museum which has a collection of sculpture and provides an insight into the history of Bundelkhand. The sound and light show is organised in Jhansi Fort and is based on the life of Rani laxmi Bai and the First War of Independence in 1857.



AYODHA

Famed as the birth place of Lord Ram, it is an important pilgrimage centre about 134 km from Lucknow. Temples and mosques exist side by side in all architectural splendor in the twin cities of Ayodhya .


The ghats of Saryu bring alive a deeply spiritual experience. Ayodhya was founded by Nawab of Awadh Sadat Khan and a later Nawab Shujauddaula made it capital of Awadh.

BAREILLY UTTAR PARDESH

It is the gateway to the Kumaon hills, and is also mid-way on the National highway from Lucknow to New Delhi. The Panchala Museum in the University Campus and the Army Service Corps Museum in Bareilly Cantonment have an excellent collection of artifacts and manuscripts.


It is a city of temples and among the prominent ones are: Hari Mandir, ISKCON Temple, Shri Dauji Ka Mandir, Shri Bankey Bihari Temple, Lakshmi Narayan Temple and Pashupati Nath Temple.
